Innovation Intensity in Industry and Business-oriented Services in Germany
In addition to R&D expenditures, innovation expenditures also include expenditures for the application of the new idea and its market introduction.
Innovation intensity as the share of innovation expenditure in the total turnover of all companies in an industry or business sector indicates the intensity across the relevant companies to invest in research, development and market introduction/application from total turnover.
Innovation intensity decreased slightly in 2021 compared to the previous year in R&D-intensive industry from 9.3 to 8.6 percent and in knowledge-intensive services from 6.3 to 6.2 percent. Since 2010, there has been an increase in innovation intensity in these sectors as well as in financial services, while intensity in other industries and other services has declined a little.
