R&D-intensive Industries and Knowledge-intensive Services in Selected Countries as a Percentage of Value Added

Knowledge-intensive services contributed significantly more to national value added than research-intensive industries in all countries considered.

Yet with a value added share of 27.5 percent, they played a smaller role in Germany in 2021 compared to the other countries considered (exception: South Korea). The share of value added in knowledge-intensive services has also only increased by 1.1 percentage points since 2000, while it has significantly increased in some of the countries under comparison. With a share of value added of 11.2 percent in 2021, Germany was able to maintain its strength in the field of high-value technology.

In the field of cutting-edge technology, Germany was well behind the leaders South Korea (10.1 percent) and Switzerland (8.9 percent) at 3.0 percent.

Time series calculated based on the new list of R&D-intensive industries (Table 1, p.11 f.) and knowledge-intensive services (Table 12, p.29) in Neuhäusler et al. (2022).
R&D-intensive industries (high-value technology and cutting-edge technology) have an above-average R&D intensity. Knowledge-intensive services are characterized by an above-average proportion of employees with tertiary education qualifications.
